Thetemple which the archaeologists explored was used as a place of worship fromthe fifteenth century B.C. until Roman times. In the most sacred room oftemple, clay fragments of fifteen statues were found. Each of these representeda goddess and had, at one time, been painted. The body of one statue was foundamong remains dating from the fifteenth century B.C. Its missing head happenedto be among remains of the fifth century B.C. This head must have been found inClassical times and carefully preserved. It was very old and precious eventhen. When the archaeologists reconstructed the fragments, they were amazed tofind that the goddess turned out to be a very modern-looking woman. She stoodthree feet high and her hands rested on her hips. She was wearing a full-lengthskirt which swept the ground. Despite her great age, she was very gracefulindeed, but, so far, the archaeologists have been unable to discover heridentity.
Itwas very old and precious even then - 这个even then 应该是指the fifthcentury 还是指考古队挖掘的时候呢?若是指the fifth century, 从句意上下文来看,应该是指the fifthcentury, 这样,不是应该说成it must have been very old and precious even then 或 it hadbeen very old and precious even then 吗?
It was very old and precious even then就是这样,前一句用 have been found in Classical times and carefully preserved.
